What happens when a mature-age woman discovers that her best friend, her workplace, her daughter and finally her lover all begin to think of her as old?
When Life Walks on Bare Soles is the story of MARIA VALANCE, a fifty-five year old woman and her humorous, yet life-changing struggles against society’s and family’s attitudes towards ageing. Which views should she adopt? Or can she create her own and still be accepted?
Maria thinks she’s doing okay in life until old age appears on the horizon. Her daughter wants to bundle her up neatly behind manicured gardens in a retirement village, her BFF (best friend forever) wants her to live the single life replete with friends with benefits, her supervisor plots to have her fired or retired. When she finds herself unemployed and job searching, life takes on a wild will of its own at first. But there’s a problem lurking underneath.
Just when she thinks she’s got a handle on her love life and love has never been or felt more exciting her work life comes to a halt and soon after her lover announces the end of their relationship. Her relationship with her twenty-year old daughter seems to be falling apart and Maria is left sweeping an empty nest. As Maria reflects on her bitterness and grief, her past supervisor arrives on her doorstep with a challenging request.
Maria sets her sights on helping to address the culture of bullying in her previous workplace but underestimates what is likely to happen when the dynamics of bad relationships come together.
When Life Walks on Bare Soles is set in the ordinary day-to-day yet vibrant life of contemporary Brisbane and the Morteon Bay region. Funny yet reflective, it’s a story of love and laughter, of loss and pain, tragedy and acceptance.
The genre is Women’s Fiction.
